US stock markets reach 12-year lows

Thursday, March 5, 2009

US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.

Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.

General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.

Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.

“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”

“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.

European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

Free Sample Cover Letter For Customer Service Jobs Warning!

By Mario Churchill

Books and websites are full of free-for-the-taking tips and tricks for a kinder, gentler job search. There are free samples of virtually every kind of cover letter you can imagine – from teaching to taxidermy. Customer service, a wide and varied industry, is no exception to the rule. Advice on searching for a job in this field is every bit as diverse as the field itself. Just because the advice is free does not mean you should take it. A pre-formatted template cover letter will not provide the kind of information a hiring manager is seeking. When looking for a competent customer service professional hiring managers have a strong sense of what a business needs and are looking for a candidate to satisfy those needs. Your cover letter should convince the hiring manager that you are suited for and capable of the job.

All cover letters are on a mission – a mission to spark the reader’s desire to learn more about the applicant. The cover letter is the first thing a potential employer sees and hears about you. It should be a head-turner. Keeping the reader’s attention is necessary if you want them to make it as far as your resume. A good cover letter is just a hint of what is coming. Touch on achievements and experience without providing too much information. Indicate that more details are available in your resume, pressing the reader on to examine the finer points of your work history.

A bold headline that says something interesting about your customer service skills is a top-notch attention-grabber. Headlines like ‘CUSTOMERS ASK FOR ME BY NAME’ or ‘5 GOOD REASONS WHY I SHOULD WORK FOR YOU’ stand out from the boring, impersonal letters that hiring managers are accustomed to reading. If you want your cover letter to stand-up and get noticed right off the bat, cite specific examples to support that eye-catching headline. Let your personal customer service experiences speak for themselves.

Let the hiring manager know that you mean business. Use the first paragraph to establish how you heard about the opening and what you know about the company. Doing a little research on the company’s history and purpose builds credibility. Taking the time to learn about the challenges the company faces and the company’s goals for the future indicates a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty. Customer service professionals must go out of their way on a regular basis. Proving beforehand, that you are willing to go the extra mile of your own volition, speaks volumes about your work ethic to a potential employer.

Written and verbal communication skills are an important part of any customer service position. Being able to understand the needs of the client or customer should be portrayed in your cover letter. Anticipating what the customer will want takes customer service to a whole new level. Use the content and construction of your cover letter to expound upon your ability to communicate effectively and thoroughly. Read the letter out loud to check for readability and comfortable flow. Consider letting a co-worker read over your letter. A different point of view may be the thing your customer service cover letter needs to be complete.

In the end, the customer service cover letter is an indispensable medium of expression. Allow the hiring manager to get to know a little about you as a person while they consider your prior experience and qualifications. Avoid just copying a sample of a free cover letter as a means to an end. Anything that easy cannot possibly hold up to the scrutiny of a manager that is looking for a first-class customer service professional. Spend the additional time to craft your own original thoughts and ideas about customer service into an appealing format. Make the reader believe that you are the one for the position with a combination of certifiable facts and passionate interest in providing quality service that keeps the customer and the company happy. Let your enthusiasm liven up what could be another submission bound for the not-interested pile of boring, run-of-the-mill applications. When the phone rings and the hiring manager asks you to come in for that interview you will be glad that you did.

Danish clothing company sells T-shirts to support FARC and PFLP

Friday, January 20, 2006

A recently created Danish clothing company is selling on the internet T-shirts in order to support the clandestine radio station of the Colombian guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the graphical workshop of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In fact the money will be used by these groups to carry on their terrorist activities. FARC activities include kidnappings, masacres, bombs, extortions and the drug trade.

Fighters and Lovers is selling the T-shirts at 170 DKK (US$27.6), from which 35 DKK (US$5.7) are to be destinated to support both armed groups.

Anna Duever, Fighters and Lovers PR chief, said to Spanish news agency EFE that their objective is to “defend freedom and social justice, which is FARC and PFLP are fighting for”. Duever believes the fact the FARC has been included by the EU in its terrorist group list is a “political game”. “We pay our taxes in Denmark, and that money is used for financing the troops our government has sent to Iraq. That’s terrorism. Besides, in Colombia there’s a regime oppressing population and torturing and killing its people”, she said.

Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolina Barco, said to local media that “financing terrorist groups is unacceptable and goes against all the international norms. Yesterday [Tuesday 19] our ambassador contacted the Danish government, we sent a protest note and have demanded an explanation.”

A year ago, a Danish NGO named Oprør (“Rebelion”) stated it had donated money to the Colombian guerrilla. A new antiterrorism law in Denmark may punish it.

Australia: Victorian government to trial driverless vehicles on public roads

Saturday, August 12, 2017

Yesterday, the state government of Victoria, Australia announced their decision to trial self-driving vehicles on two of the state’s major connecting motorways, the CityLink and Tullamarine Freeway. The trial is to use autonomous vehicles from automobile companies including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Tesla. The two-year trial is to have three phases.

The cars are to drive alongside commuters, but in public testing a driver is always to be present, as Victorian law requires drivers always keep a hand on the steering wheel. However, in occasional closures of the Burnley Tunnel, with no other drivers to endanger, the cars are to be tested with nobody in the vehicle.

Lane assist, cruise control, and recognition of traffic signs are in the trial’s first phase, expected to complete before the end of the year. This includes monitoring how the driver-less cars respond to road conditions, including lane markings and electronic speed signs.

“Victoria is at the forefront of automated vehicle technology — we’re investing in this trial to explore ways that this technology can be used to reduce crashes and keep people safe on our roads”, said Luke Donnellan, the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety. He noted, “Ninety per cent of the fault of accidents is human error […] so we know that if we can take out human error we will have less accidents”.

Tim Hansen, Victoria Police’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, said that police had founded a project team to investigate how self-driving vehicles would change policing on roads. “Can we intercept vehicles more safely to avoid pursuits and ramming?”, he asked.

The trial is a partnership between the state government, Victoria’s road management authority VicRoads, owner of the CityLink toll road Transurban, and insurance company RACV.

Energy companies to raise consumer rates

Tuesday, October 4, 2005

Reliant Energy and CenterPoint Energy–two local utilities in Houston, Texas–plan to increase consumer rates in response to increased demand and recent disasters.

Reliant Energy is expected to raise rates to effect a 14% increase on a 1,000 kilowatt-hour bill. A typical customer could see an increase up to $20 per month. Reliant has reached an agreement with the Texas Public Utilities Commission to raise rates in two steps, once at the end of October, and again on 1 January 2006.

CenterPoint Energy must increase charges for services such as meter-reading and customer service. The Texas Public Utilities Commission prohibits natural gas companies from buying wholesale product, raising rates, and reselling. Wholesale prices of natural gas also continue to rise due to increased demand and declining domestic supply. Natural gas cannot be easily shipped to other regions like oil.

Consumer energy prices are expected to rise across the state, in some cases as much as 20%.

The Texas Public Utilities Commission must approve rate increases before they go into effect, but approval is expected.

Thai prime minister dismisses offer by anti-government protesters

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Thailand’s prime minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has ruled out a compromise offer by anti-government protest leaders for parliament to be dissolved in thirty days, with elections to be held in 90 days.

In a televised address on Sunday, with army chief General Anupong Paochinda at his side, the prime minister dismissed the offer made by the National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD), saying such issues could not be resolved in such a short period of time, and “because they use violence and intimidation. I cannot accept this.”

Abhisit said the government stood by an offer made during earlier talks with the UDD for the house to be dissolved within the next nine months.

In reaction, the UDD, also called the Red Shirts, maintained an earlier call for parliament to be dissolved immediately. The UDD also withdrew from any further negotiations with the government. UDD leaders have repeatedly warned supporters rallying in central Bangkok’s retail and business areas of the threat of a new government crackdown.

There have been two large incidents of street violence in the past month or so, resulting in 26 deaths and injuries to hundreds of people. The Red Shirts primarily consist of supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, ousted in a 2006 coup. He was later given a two-year prison term on charges of corruption, although Shinawatra left the country in self-exile to avoid being jailed.
