Australia’s Old Parliament House becomes heritage listed

Wednesday, June 21, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced on Tuesday that Old Parliament House in Canberra has been heritage listed. It is the 31st entry on the National Heritage List.

The listing acknowledges the role the building has in shaping Australia’s culture and protects it from being modified in any way which could affect its historic value.

Old Parliament House served as the home of Australia’s parliament from 1927 until 1988, when it was relocated to the present parliament house. From 1901-1927, parliament met in Melbourne in the Victorian Parliament House (the state parliament was relocated for 26 years). Before being known as Old Parliament House, the building was known as Provisional Parliament House – as it was intended to be used for 50 years before a permanent building could be built.

In the 61 years the building was used as the seat of parliament, the government changed only seven times, and several new political parties were formed (the Liberals, Anti-Communist Labor Party, and the Australian Democrats).

Mr Howard said the building played an important part in Australia’s political history. “Old Parliament House will always be an important part of our political history with its rich collection of original furniture, art and memorabilia helping to illustrate the story of Australia’s political customs and functions,” he said.

According to Mr Howard, the National Heritage List lists sites which have helped shape the country. “The National Heritage List contains places that have played an important role in the development of our nation, such as Captain Cook’s landing place in New South Wales, Port Arthur in Tasmania and the Australian War Memorial in Canberra,” said the Prime Minister.

The building currently houses Australia’s National Portrait Gallery, and serves as a venue for receptions and exhbitions.

Need An Electrical Company Washington Dc Is Served By Experienced Professionals

byAlma Abell

The modern age has witnessed an explosion in the capabilities and availability of technological devices. As a result of these developments, it is essential for almost every building to be properly wired for these items. If a building has old or inadequate wiring, then it may be possible for electronics inside the building to be severely damaged. Fortunately, for those needing an Electrical Company Washington DC is served by Hawkins Electrical Service.

Typically, individuals will only require the services of an electrical contractor when they are experiencing an electrical problem or their building is undergoing construction work. Interestingly, some people fail to appreciate that remodeling may require rewiring of entire rooms. While general contractors are able to perform the vast majority of work on these projects, few are certified or experienced enough to safely complete electrical work. Not surprisingly, electrical contractors are among the most common subcontractors employed by construction companies.

When an electrical contractor is employed, they must have a thorough understanding of how the room will be used. This information will help ensure they select wiring that can accommodate the electrical load that will be required. Failure to use the correct wiring can result in fires, damaged electrical components and numerous other problems. Fortunately, if you are needing the services of an Electrical Company in Washington DC the friendly and experienced professionals from the Hawkins Electrical Service will be able to quickly complete almost any type of electrical work.

Constructing a new building or remodeling an existing building will almost always require the services of an experienced electrician. Unfortunately, some individuals may attempt to complete this work without professional help. In addition to posing a hazard to the building, it is possible for individuals to sustain life threatening injuries from electrical projects. Luckily, there are highly trained and experienced professionals that are able to accommodate the needs of almost any client. While the exact amount of time needed to complete the work will vary from project to project, the technicians from Hawkins Electrical Service provide all clients with free quotes.

Man calls for seizure of Justice Souter home, under eminent domain ruling

Friday, July 1, 2005

In the wake of a United States Supreme Court ruling in Kelo v. New London on eminent domain last week, a California man has proposed that Justice David Souter‘s New Hampshire home be seized by the state and a hotel be built on the site. Logan Darrow Clements faxed a letter to town officials in Weare, New Hampshire June 28, 2005 that justified the action as such:

“The justification for such an eminent domain action is that our hotel will better serve the public interest as it will bring in economic development and higher tax revenue to Weare.”

Justice Souter, who was in the majority ruling in the Kelo case, has lived at the farmhouse in Weare since he was 11 years old. Clements indicated that it was necessary to build on that location because “it is a unique site being the home of someone largely responsible for destroying property rights for all Americans.” The action has given rise to a great deal of support nationwide, as many are writing to the councilors of the small town of Weare to voice their approval for the proposal.

The proposal for the “Lost Liberty Hotel“, as it is to be called, features a number of components which seem to focus on the libertarian leanings of its designer. A dining room, called the “Just Desserts Cafe” and a museum based on the “loss of freedom in America” are two such components. Instead of a Bible provided by the Gideons (a standard item placed in most American hotel rooms), each guest will receive a free copy of Ayn Rand‘s novel Atlas Shrugged.

Canadian annual seal hunt begins amid controversy

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, opened the Canadian seal hunt amid protests by animal rights groups, at a time when bans on seal product imports are becoming more prevalent internationally.

Seal hunters along the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence are allowed to catch a maximum of 270,000 Harp Seal pups from a total estimated population of 5.5 million. 8,200 is the allowable catch of Hooded seals from an estimated population of 600,000, and seal hunters may catch 50,000 grey seals from an approximate population of 300,000.

The Harp seal pups may be killed as soon as they have molted their white pelts, which occurs 10 to 21 days after birth.

It is reported that Russia has shut down the seal hunt on its shores. The United States, Netherlands, and Belgium ban the import of seal products. The European Parliament committee has endorsed a ban on seal product imports by the 27 European Union (EU) member states, in the form of a proposed bill that would still allow the Canadian Inuit to trade in seal products for first nation cultural purposes. All members of the EU must approve the bill for it to become law.

“While we are extremely disappointed that the European Parliament has called for a ban of the trade of seal products, our position remains that any ban on a humanely conducted hunt, such as Canada’s, is completely without merit. We will continue to explore all legal and diplomatic options and we will exercise our rights to their fullest extent under international trade laws if and when it becomes necessary and appropriate.”

“Sealing is a significant source of income in many small, isolated coastal communities throughout Atlantic Canada, Quebec and the North, and creates critical employment opportunities for processing plants, as well as fuel, food and equipment suppliers in coastal communities,” said Minister Shea.

“Our government will continue to defend the rights of Canadian sealers to provide a livelihood for their families through our humane, responsible and sustainable hunt,” she said. “It represents as much as 35 per cent of a sealer’s annual income and is important for thousands of families at a time of year when other fishing options are limited at best.”

The first area to open up to the seal hunt was the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where 30 percent of the catch is allowed.

Sixteen observer permits have been issued. “The majority of the observers are people who protest against the seal hunt, but there are journalists and other observers as well. We try to make sure there’s an even proportion of sealing activity and observer activity,” Mr. Jenkins, Department of Fisheries and Oceans spokesman said. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is going to observe and record the commercial seal hunt.

“It’s devastating to be here, to know the commercial seal hunt has started again. It’s clear that a change is on the horizon with the European Parliament voting on a proposal to ban seal-product trade in the EU and many people in the Canadian sealing industry believe that could spell the beginning of the end of the commercial seal hunt,” commented Rebecca Aldworth, director of the Canadian chapter of Humane Society International.

Skills: I do know this probly doesnt make a whole lotta sense, but i dont recall the names of these skills xD. so unil i get back on plus write down the skill names, i used the shortcut numbers to indicate which skill is which. The PVP one is probly most confusing. The green path is the first part, plus the red comes after. In pvp stun is your best mate. If you can stun the opponent then you can much win. I use stun, then use assault skills, then use sweep hell, assault skills, skill block, slow, plus then repeat. In TW, warriors are much shields that take hits plus stun people. They rely on other peoples’ aoes to do lots of the killing because warrior can only assault single opponent.

If you’re repping in a party, your job is to collect plus not let the other people die. Do this by A) learning the pulls plus B) using Noble Responsibility plus sweep hell.Rep GuideI will do my best to describe how to rep with efficient pulls. For beginners, reps (repeatable quests) are how you level in this game. You do the same quests over plus over again until you level plus move on to the next set of quests. All reps need killing. To be faster, it helps to know how to kill the most guys the quickest. A “Pull” is what they use to explain a way to collect the monsters to be killed. than walking out plus killing monsters individually, it is faster to collect them in to one place plus kill them with AoE (area of effect skills). Some classes like warrior plus assasin dont have AoE skills, so they want to party with someone who does (priest, wizard, summoner, archer). As a warrior, you will be the tank of the party, meaning that you will run plus collect the monsters plus take all the hits. Other classes are not as tough as us, so it is important to keep the monsters attacking you, do this by using the “Noble Responsibility” skill. Now, one more thing. There are 3 types of monsters: melee, ranged, plus magic. Melee are your best mate because they are so easy to pull. run through plus they follow you. Ranged will throw rocks or shoot arrows at you from a distance, but if you get close, they turn to melee. Magic monsters are annoying because they seldom turn to melee plus so it is hard to pull them. Usually you want to make use of a tree or something to bring them to where you want them to be going.Horusland: 1-18Usually, you dont want to pull monsters to one area here because the AoE skill requires like lvl 16 to make use of. So for this area i labled where the quests are. Also I labled where a quantity of the people are for the beginning quests because I often listen to people ask where these quests/ npcs are. For the 7-10 reps, port to Muffin Hunter Camp. For both 11-13 plus 14-16 reps, port to Horusland Village. For 17-18 reps port to the Inquiry Team’s Camp.Tarat Plains: 19-27For 19-21 reps, port to Temporary Camp of Gate Battle Soldiers. For 22-24 reps, port to Spilban Adventure Team Camp. For 25-27 reps, port to Northern Watch Tower of South StreetChesed: 28-33For all the reps here Bone Collector Camp is the nearest portal plus you want to port here from Magnaskia Military District.Cochma: 34-39These are the worst ever. For 34-36 reps, port to Temporary Jigoris Fortress. For 37-39 reps, port to Elderly Ternpole Town. Again, through Magnaskia.Binah: 40-48For all reps here, port to Village of Silent Sheeps. Again, this is through Magnaskia.Geburah: 49+Port to Chaos Assault Team Advance base.Hopefully this helps some. If you have any lovely suggestions you can put them out in our comment . Thank you plus welcome next time !

Poland accuses Belarus of human rights violations

Monday, August 1, 2005

Poland has called for the EU to assist curtailing what it has called human rights abuses in Belarus. Belarusian papers describe this as a ‘dirty political game’, and part of a ‘cold war’ waged on president Alexander Lukashenko.

The Belarusian Riot police with guns and dogs seized the headquarters of the Union of Poles in Belarus, an association representing the 400 thousand ethnic minority Polish people living in western areas of Belarus that were part of Poland until World War II.

Earlier this year, Amnesty International reported a “pattern of deliberate obstruction, harassment and intimidation of human rights defenders” in Belarus. Reporters Without Borders recently accused the Belarusian authorities of hounding and arresting journalists from the country’s Polish minority. Lukashenko has recently closed the country’s main Polish newspaper, printing a bogus paper instead with the same name that praised his regime. Lukashenko accused Poland of an attempt to overthrow his regime by stirring up a peaceful revolution in Belarus like the “orange revolution” in [[Ukraine last year.

The dispute between Poland and Belarus escalated further as Poland responded by recalling its ambassador from Belarus for indefinite consultations and called on the European Union to impose sanctions on the Belarusian leadership.

Polish Foreign Minister Adam Rotfeld said a clampdown is under way, aimed at destroying “all elements of political pluralism and independence” in Belarus. France expressed her solidarity with Poland on the issue of human rights in Belarus a day after the EU said it was worried about the situation in the country.

The European Union will finance radio and TV programs to be broadcasted to Belarus.

Norwegian national assembly votes to allow same-sex marriage and adoption

Thursday, June 12, 2008

The Norwegian national assembly voted Wednesday to change the existing marriage and adoption laws. After debating for several hours, the vote resulted in a 84 to 41 majority in favour of the new law which allows homosexual couples to marry and adopt children.

For the past several weeks, there have been extensive debate over the change, with both sides staging demonstrations in most of the larger cities in Norway. The last time Norway changed the laws regarding marriage was in 1993, when gay and lesbian people were allowed to form partnership unions with similar rights as marriages. The existing law attracted criticism in the last few years for discriminating against homosexuals, as they were denied marriage, adoption, and the use of assisted reproductive technology.

The new law, as proposed, allows marriages between homosexuals, granting them the same rights to religious services in connection with their marriage, as well as the right to adopt children with the same requirements being applied as to heterosexuals. The new law also allows lesbian couples to use assisted reproductive technology.

The new law does not require The Church of Norway to marry gays or lesbians, but it allows ministers to perform this service if the national church council permits it.

Another part of the new proposal, which would have concealed the identity of sperm donors, failed to gain a majority during the vote. Citing the right for children to know their biological parents as more important, a majority of the representatives voted against this part of the proposal.
