Proud Boys chapter leader pleads guilty in US Capitol attack

Sunday, April 10, 2022

On Friday, leader of the North Carolina chapter of the Proud Boys organization Charles Donohoe pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to obstruct the United States Congress and assault of an officer of the law, both felonies, on January 6, 2021.

Donohoe’s plea was part of a bargain in which he also agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors’ investigations of the Proud Boys and its leadership. Other alleged leaders, including national chairman Enrique Tarrio, have entered not guilty pleas on charges of seditious conspiracy. According to prosecutors, they were members of an elite group of leaders called the “Ministry of Self Defense” and hand-picked by Tarrio.

Prosecutors’ filings also said Donohoe supplied the Proud Boys with radio transmitters, so they could communicate before and during the 2021 attack on the Capitol. Tarrio was arrested two days before the riot. Immediately after Tarrio’s arrest, Donohoe deleted the group’s messages on the Telegram communication platform and messaged that plans might be compromised. “Well at least they won’t get our boots on the ground plan because we are one step ahead of them,” he wrote in a follow-up.

Donohoe reportedly never entered the Capitol, even though he was in the first wave of people descending upon the building, as he was overcome by pepper spray. Nevertheless, his assault charges stemmed from throwing two water bottles at Capitol Police officers. He allegedly also sent messages stating: “We stormed the capitol unarmed … we took it over.”

The assault on the Capitol took place while Congress was certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election won by Joe Biden. The Proud Boys were in favor of a second term for former president Donald Trump.

Global study dispels some myths about sexual behaviour

Wednesday, November 1, 2006

The first comprehensive global study of sexual behaviour, published today as part of The Lancet’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Online Series, found that people aren’t losing their virginity at ever younger ages, married people have the most sex, and there is no firm link between promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases.

Experts say data gleaned from the study will be useful not only in dispelling popular myths about sexual behaviour, but in shaping policies that will help improve sexual health across the world. Researchers looked at previously published studies on sexual behaviour in the last decade.

Professor Kaye Wellings, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicines, and her colleagues analysed data on sexual behaviour in the last decade from 59 countries.

The report also shows no support for the common notion that there is a culture of multiple sexual partners in countries with poor sexual health. Multiple sexual partners, it turns out, are more common in industrialised than in developing nations.

The study also found that contrary to popular belief, sexual activity is not starting earlier. Nearly everywhere, men and women have their first sexual experiences in their late teens; from 15 to 19 years old — with generally younger ages for women than for men, especially in developing countries.

“A single woman is more able to negotiate safe sex in certain circumstances than a married woman,” said Paul van Look, director of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organisation, who was unconnected to the study and points out that “married women in Africa and Asia are often threatened by unfaithful husbands who frequent prostitutes”.

There is much greater equality between women and men with regard to the number of sexual partners in rich countries than in poor countries, the study found. This imbalance has significant public health implications. Because of the diversity of sexual habits worldwide, Wellings warns that no single approach to sexual health will work everywhere. “There are very different economic, religious and social rules governing sexual conduct across the world,” Wellings said.

For example, men and women in Australia, Britain, France and the United States tend to have an almost equal number of sexual partners. In contrast, in Cameroon, Haiti, and Kenya, men tend to have multiple partners while women tend only to have one.

Along with other industrialised countries, Australia was one in which having two or more sexual partners in the past year was comparatively common.

Single men and women in Africa were fairly sexually inactive: only two-thirds of them reported recent sexual activity, compared with three-quarters of their counterparts in developed countries.

In what researchers said was proof the sexual double standard was still strong, more men than women reported having more than one partner.

“These findings beg the question of who the men are having sex with,” they wrote.

Italy had one of the lowest percentages of men who had sex before age 15 (4 per cent), compared to 18 per cent in the United States and 30 per cent in Brazil and the Dominican Republic. The researchers said early initiation was more likely to be non-consensual, unsafe and generally to be regretted later.

The study suggests that unequal treatment of girls and women as the major sexual-health issue.

The researchers call for providing sexual health services to unmarried young women, supplying condoms, decriminalizing commercial sex and homosexual sex, and prosecuting the perpetrators of sexual violence.

Experts say data gleaned from the study will be useful not only in dispelling popular myths about sexual behaviour, but in shaping policies that will help improve sexual health across the world.

“There’s a misperception that there’s a great deal of promiscuity in Africa, which is one of the potential reasons for HIV/AIDS spreading so rapidly,” said van Look

Fewer than half of unmarried non-virgins reported having sex in the past month.

Some of the major findings the survey found were:

 • School-based sexual education delays and does not hasten onset of sexual activity.
 • First sexual experience is often forced or sold.
 • Marriage is no safeguard of sexual health. It is more difficult for married women to negotiate safe sex and condom use than it is for single women.
 • Condom use is increasing, but condom-use rates remain low in many developing countries.
 • Among girls who marry at a very young age, “very early sexual experience within marriage can be coercive and traumatic.”
 • While there is no major trend toward earlier sexual experience, a trend toward later marriage has led to an increase in premarital sex.
 • Public health measures to improve sexual health should focus not only on individual behaviours but also on broader issues such as gender, poverty, and mobility.
 • Public-health messages intended to reduce sexual risk-taking “should respect diversity and preserve choice.”
 • Monogamy is the dominant pattern in most parts of the world. Men report more multiple partnerships than do women. Such men are more likely to live in developed nations.

Metal Art Welding And The Basics Of Welding Metal Art

By Ivan Smith

Metal art welding is basically a form of sculpting in reverse. Whereas sculpting starts from a block of stone and the process entails the removal of all material not part of what is to be the finished piece, metal art welding starts with nothing and keeps on adding pieces until the work of art in completed. Two processes, converse to each other, but resulting in the same end.

Unlike sculptors who work in stones like granites or marble, the metal welding artist can use just about any metal, or combinations of metals he chooses to. He may form his creations out of virgin metal sheets, rods or pipes; or he may assemble existing pieces of shaped metal in to final product.

Welding is, in its most simple form, the joining together of two pieces of metal by heating the surfaces and then placing them together until the cooled metal forms a joint. There are different types of welding methods that can be used, depending on the types of metal involved and the nature of the joint – whether it requires strength, a fine finish, whether the metal can withstand high heat etc.

Metal art welding can be done on any scale, from the finest pieces of jewelry that are finely welded or soldered together to huge outdoor sculptures.

The beginnings of modern metal art welding lie in the emergence of ‘junk’ sculpture when young artists understood that the joining of various pieces of existing scrap metal could produce works of artistic integrity and merit. The first works of modern welded metal art were made from things found in junkyards – hence the name. Old car parts, refrigerator bodies, oddly shaped bits of scrap metal, you name it, they were all welded to together and the results were often surprising in their artistic expression and originality. Embellishments were done in the form of special coatings and paint applied to some or all of the metal sculptures.

The next stage was to addition of moving parts – motorized sculptures. Windmill effects, rotating tables and wind driven mobiles were some of the early common design themes used. Much of early welded metal art was created for shock effect and it succeeded.

Today metal art welding is returning to its basics, and, in the opinion of many art critics, its purest form. Simple and expressive forms, created by welding together seemingly uncomplimentary pieces of metal can create a memorable effect, as in the welding of a rusty old car axle to a pair of roller skate frames to express the artist’s opinion of the negatives of fossil fueled vehicles.

While metal art welding can be tiny, as in small jewelry items, it are normally large in size. The largeness of the welded form adds to its impact. That is why the majority of art made by the metal welding process is in the form of outdoor sculpture.

Since most welded art is made up from existing pieces of metal, this is one art form where the mind of the artist must be able to not just envision the finished work of art, but be able to look at using existing shapes to create his vision. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the artist must be able to locate the shapes he needs to create the final effect.

Record number of failed banks reported in US for February

Sunday, March 1, 2009

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), a record number of banks for a calendar month have failed in the United States in February. A total of 10 banks failed in February, more than any other month since October of 2000. A total of 16 banks have closed this year so far, with 24 closing in 2008. If the current trend continues, the total number of failed banks will more than double in March, as compared to the total number of failed banks in 2008.

The list grew after the FDIC took over the funds from the Security Savings Bank of Henderson, Nevada and the Heritage Community Bank in Glenwood, Illinois on February 27. The FDIC issued press releases for both institutions.

The four branches of the Heritage Community Bank reopened on February 28 “as branches of MB Financial Bank,” stated the FDIC. The bank’s assets were worth nearly US$233 million and had customer deposits worth nearly $220 million. MB is expected to purchase $230 million of the bank’s assets and the FDIC will “retain the remaining assets for later disposition.”

“The two Security Savings Bank branches will reopen on Monday (March 2) as branches of Bank of Nevada,” stated the FDIC. The bank held assets worth approximately $238.3 million with customer deposits of nearly $180 million. Bank of Nevada will purchase approximately $111 million of the bank’s assets while the FDIC will retain the remaining balance, also “for later disposition.”

“The FDIC insures deposits at the nation’s 8,305 banks and savings associations and it promotes the safety and soundness of these institutions by identifying, monitoring and addressing risks to which they are exposed,” added the FDIC.

Both banks, when reopened, will immediately become members of the FDIC.

Six-year-old boy on vacation in Venezuela dies in plane crash

Sunday, April 19, 2009

Six-year-old Thomas David Horne from the United Kingdom has died and eleven other British tourists were injured Friday when their plane crashed in Canaima National Park in Venezuela. They were on a sight seeing tour of the world’s tallest waterfalls, the Angel Falls.

The single engine, nine-seater Cessna 208 Caravan, lifted off shortly before the end of the runway, lost power, and then surged briefly before plummeting into the Venezuelan jungle in front of the 3,200 ft falls.

“It started to take off and we sensed it was losing power. Then it seemed to get it back and lifted off just 200 metres before the end of the runway. Then it dived into the trees,” reported Makeli Freire, a park tour guide.

Three of the injured sustained serious injuries, while the others suffered mainly broken bones. Thomas Horne, who sustained serious head injuries, died on the way to a local hospital. The pilot, co-pilot and tour guide were among the injured. Everyone on board was flown to Ciudad Bolívar, the capital city of Venezuela’s Bolívar state, where they were treated for their injuries. Among the injured were Thomas’s mother and father Jane and David who were among those who had broken bones. They were British tourists finishing up a two week holiday to Venezuela.

“The young boy died as he was being flown to hospital. His parents are both physically OK but are completely distraught over the loss of their son,” said Maiker Puga, of the Ciudad Bolivar clinic.

Liz and her husband Keith Grainger and S. Phillips, also British tourists, were also injured in the crash. The names of the three other British tourists and the three person crew who were injured have not been released at this time.

The plane tour was offered by First Choice, a division of TUI Travel PLC who extended their “heartfelt sympathy to family and friends during this deeply sad time.” LTA airline has suspended further flights until the investigation is concluded.

June Holman, Thomas’s aunt who was not on holidays said, that “there is nothing worse than losing a loved one, especially not a young child with their whole life ahead of them. The thoughts of us all are with his parents Jane and Dave at this very sad time.”

Canadian charter airline Skyservice suspends operations

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Skyservice, a Canadian charter airline, has cancelled several flights from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, with reports that the airline has ceased operations.

The company cites debt levels and changes in the vacation travel market with its decision to shut down operations and file for receivership. At the time of the filing in Ontario Superior Court, Skyservice is said to owe almost $9 million CAD to long-term partner and Thomas Cook subsidiary Sunquest Vacations. This situation exacerbated the debt load already put on the airline by a leveraged buyout in 2007 by Vancouver-based private equity firm Gibralt Capital Corporation. That placed more debt than was workable on the troubled airline, along with Roynat Capital calling in their loans to Skyservice earlier in the year.

Skyservice has stated that it will work with its partner companies and other providers to ensure customers stranded by the airline’s sudden shutdown are dealt with effectively, according to a company representative. In addition to customers impacted by the cancellation of flights for the month of April, approximately 860 jobs are expected to be lost as a result of this shutdown.

Tour operator Signature Vacations, under a contract with Skyservice until 2013, has stated that they were prepared for the airline’s receivership, having joined forces with rival service Sunwing Airlines.

Last year, operator Conquest Vacations declared bankruptcy, allegedly due to the economic downturn and reduced revenues throughout the industry.

Muscle Cars The “Super Cars” Of Earlier 60’s And 70’s

By Smiley Webb

Muscle car is a term used to refer automobiles that have high performance. This term was generally referred for cars of American, Australian and South African models of the earlier 1960s and 1970s.

A muscle car generally describes a car with 2-doors rear wheel drive and normally is mid size. This car has a large and powerful V8 engine and special trim. This trim helps in achieving maximum torque on the streets and in racing competitions. Muscle cars were entirely different from small sport cars.

Muscle cars were called the ‘super cars’ of the time. They were very popular in racing the quarter mile which was their performance standard.

Some of the popular muscle cars were Chevelle, Camaro, Nova, Road Runner and Cuda.

Among these cars some of the fastest muscle cars were Road Runners, Chevelles and Chargers. These were called family cruisers. The power of these cars lied in their engine design. Men for their transportation used Camaros and Cudas, and initially these cars were sport cars.

The Chrysler line of muscle cars was affectionately called the Mopar muscle car. These Mopar powered cars were a favorite of the muscle car owners because of their sleek design and the famous Hemi engine.

The Chevelle SS line of muscle cars from Chevrolet was also a sleek designed “Super Car” with the huge 454 cubic inch engine it fast became a favorite for muscle car owners.

1969 Road Runner

This car was ranked 3 in muscle car category. This car was able to achieve a speed of 112mph in 12.80 seconds. The engine model used by this car was 440 Six BBL. Horse power of this car was 390 and it came with 4 speed manual transmission.

1970 Cuda

It was 4 in ranking. Performance of this car was quite pleasing and most of the people liked its body style. It achieved a speed of 107mph in 13.10 seconds and its engine type was a 426 Hemi. Horsepower of this car was around 425; it was available in a 4 speed manual.

1970 Chevelle

The 1970 Chevelle ranked number 5 in the muscle car category. It had a strong standard six speed, 454 cubic inch performance engine. These engines had a controlled combustion system and exhaust emission control systems, these emission control systems were quite impressive in performance, they also came with a transmission controlled vacuum spark. This Chevelle SS454 was a powerful car that acquired a speed of 107mph in 13.12 seconds. It came with a 4 speed, 450 hp vehicle with 454LS6 engine.

1969 Camaro

This car was number 6 in ranking when compared to other speedsters. The Camaro that was tested acquired a speed of 100mph in 13.12 seconds. And its engine was 427 ZL1. It came with a 430-horse engine. It also included a 4 speed manual transmission.

1968 and 1969 Charger

A 1968 charger tested at a speed of 105mph and it acquired that speed in 13.50 seconds. The engine in this car was a 426 Hemi and it had an automatic transmission. The Hemi was the engine of choice by these Charger enthusiasts during this time.

Here is a 1969 charger 500 and it was ranked 11 in performance. This car achieved a speed of 109mph in 13.48 seconds. The engine model was a 426 Hemi. The Horsepower of this car was a 425 horse engine. It also included a 4 speed manual transmission.

Canada’s social insurance assets pass $140 billion in fourth quarter

Sunday, February 13, 2011

With a fourth-quarter investment earnings of $3.9 Billion CAD, largely driven by stock market rises, the Canada Pension Plan’s (CPP) assets rose to $140.1 Billion reported the CPP Investment Board on Thursday.

Rate of return for the quarter netted three percent, bringing the first nine months of the fiscal year to 8.3%. The fund’s broad exposure to equities, in concert with a good quarter for stocks both in Canada and internationally, was largely to be credited according to CEO David Deneson.

The assets value rose from $127.6 Billion March 31st 2010, to $138.6 B on September 30th, to $140.1 B December 31st. The $3.9 B investment earnings, 3.58 of which came from the 54% of the portfolio in equities, was partially offset by seasonal outlays of $2.4 B to plan members.

The fund was very active throughout the calendar year, and particularly active in infrastructure, real estate, and private equity. As part of a consortium they completed the $4.8 B purchase of UK-based Tomkins plc, as well as purchasing Australian-based Intoll for $3.4 B thus acquiring a 30% stake in the 407 Express Toll Route (ETR) near Toronto — which they expanded purchasing a further 10% stake from Spain’s Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transporte, S.A. (CINTRA). They acquired a 25% equity stake in Westfield Stratford City, a retail complex adjacent to London’s Olympics venue, among many real estate ventures.

The CPP fund covers every province except Quebec, whose Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec is the only larger pension fund in Canada. The five-year annualised investment rate of return for the CPP reserve fund was 3.5%, its 10-year rate of return was 5.6%, at the close of 2010. The fund was established in 1997.
