Fuel leak prompts 17,000-vehicle recall by Toyota

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Toyota announced on Friday that it will recall around 17,000 Lexus vehicles in response to risks of the fuel tank in the cars leaking after a collision.

The Lexus HS 250h model was subjected to the recall following a US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation. Despite previously passing Toyota safety inspections, the conclusions of an NHTSA sub-contracted investigator were that; when the vehicles in question collided with an object at more than fifty-miles-per hour, more than 142 grams of fuel, the maximum allowed by US law, leaked from the crashed car.

According to Toyota, further tests did not show any additional failure of the fuel tank.

In response to the findings, Toyota issued a recall of all affected vehicles, since the company had no solution immediately available. The recall includes 13,000 cars already sold, as well as another 4,000 still at dealerships.

Toyota says it plans to conduct further tests to determine the cause of the leak. A Toyota spokesman, Brian Lyons, said that the company was “still working to determine what the root cause of the condition is.” It’s still unclear when exactly the recall will take place, or when dealerships will be allowed to sell this model again. Lyons said that Toyota is “working feverishly to get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Toyota isn’t aware of any accidents stemming from the leaking fuel tank in the affected vehicles, first introduced in the summer of 2009.

Solutions For Saggy, Aging Knees

Submitted by: Katie Perry

The knee is a truly amazing structure that supports the weight of your entire body and allows you to walk, run, jump, squat, kneel, and generally move about throughout the day. However, all of that function comes with a price. The wear and tear of continual bending and stretching can take a toll on your knee skin, making it drier and more susceptible to the signs of premature aging than the skin in other areas of your body. In addition, as part of the natural aging process, the body loses muscle mass and the collagen beneath the skin s surface begins to break down, which can cause it to lose elasticity and sag. The force of gravity on the knee, coupled with the extra skin in the area that facilitates the bending and stretching of the leg, can make sagging skin in the knee area particularly noticeable.

Knee sag can affect all individuals, whether they are overweight or in terrific shape. In fact, athletic and otherwise thin individuals can often have saggy knees. That s because a lack of fat to hold up the skin above the knee can make the loose skin appear even more pronounced. If you ve found that your knees are less taut and attractive than they once were, you needn t resort to changing the way you dress or feel about yourself. Lifestyle and diet are factors that play in role in the appearance of the knees. Therefore, there are steps you can take to make your knee skin look tighter and more youthful.

Lifestyle Changes to Improve the Appearance of Your Knees

Developing good habits is often much easier than attempting to correct a condition after it occurs. To take proper care of your knees and help prevent wrinkling and other signs of premature aging, you can:

Regularly exfoliate your knee skin with a loofah, scrub, or body brush to slough off dead cells and help stimulate natural collagen production.

After scrubbing your knees in the shower or bath, coat your skin with a rich moisturizer to help keep it supple.

Incorporate targeted knee-toning exercises, such as leg extensions, squats, and lunges, into your fitness routine.

Practice yoga or Pilates to help keep your knees strong and flexible.

Drink a sufficient amount of water and consume a diet rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids, which are not only good for your skin, but also provide overall health benefits.

Sometimes, though, the excess fatty tissue and lax skin situated around the knees and thighs are impervious to regular exercise and other good habits. In such cases, surgery might be an option.

A Thigh Lift for Smoother, More Defined Knees

A thigh lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves the removal of excess fatty deposits and lax skin from the knee and thigh areas and the tightening of the remaining skin to create a sleeker, more well-defined appearance. This type of surgery might be beneficial for a patient who has lost elasticity and tone in his or her knees and thighs due to aging or a significant weight loss.

When performing a thigh lift, a surgeon will generally create an incision spanning from the groin to the inner knee. The surgeon will then reshape the area by removing excess fat and skin, make deep stitches to help establish new contours, and suture all incisions closed.

Following the procedure, a patient can expect to experience some degree of swelling and bruising for up to six weeks afterward. To minimize these effects and facilitate healing, compression garments might be recommended. While a thigh lift is a generally safe procedure, as with any type of surgery, there are inherent risks of infection, blood clots, and suture separation.

Consult with an Experienced Surgeon

If you are interested in learning more about a thigh lift procedure to target sagging knee skin, you are encouraged to consult with an experienced cosmetic surgeon who is Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A qualified surgeon can assess your needs, answer your questions, discuss your expectations, and recommend a treatment plan to achieve your desired aesthetic result. Should you decide to proceed with a thigh lift, your surgeon can fully discuss both the benefits and risks with you.

Arsenic and Thalidomide may be used to fight cancer

Monday, April 11, 2005

A gathering of more than a thousand medical researchers in Sydney, Australia, has been told that arsenic and Thalidomide — banned in the 1960s after being linked to gross birth abnormalities — held hope as a basis for new treatments, extending the lives of patients with an so-far incurable bone marrow cancer, multiple myeloma.

Diagnosis of the disease has increased by 45% in Australia since 1992. It is the most lethal form of cancer, and the topic of discussion, at the 10th International Myeloma Workshop, continuing until the 16th of April.

The two treatments had advantages over existing chemotherapy treatments, including lessened side-effects, and reducing the need for chemo- and radiotherapy. They may also be usable to treat other illnesses. Both were still under test.

“The development of arsenic dates back many years when it was used for lowering the blood counts in patients, even at the turn of the century,” Professor Miles Prince, of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, told Australian Associated Press for the 10th International Myeloma Workshop.

“Subsequently [arsenic] was used in China since the 1960s for treating certain forms of Leukaemia,” he said.

It could be used to induce the cell to “commit suicide”.

“The side effects with Thalidomide are much less than with chemotherapy because it’s not damaging innocent bystander cells – so you don’t get low blood counts, you don’t lose your hair, you don’t get a sore mouth,” he said.

“It was originally thought to work because [Thalidomide] blocks the blood vessel growth in tumours, and that is still true, but the research that we’ve done has shown that one of its major causes of action is to stimulate [ immune system ] T-cells which are directly against the tumour, and these T-cells help patients with myeloma fight their disease,” Professor Douglas Joshua, head of Haemotology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, told Australian radio.

“There’s no doubt that with the new combinations of drugs – we’ve got Thalidomide, the sons of Thalidomide, Velcade and arsenic – we’re adding years onto patient’s lives and certainly it could add up to five years or more,” according to Prof. Prince.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Benefits Of Calling An A/C Repair Company If The Capacitor On An Ac System Is Not Working

byadmin

One of the most difficult issues a homeowner may have to deal with during summer weather can be an air conditioner that has stopped working. When this happens, it can cause comfort issues for those in the home. Because of this, most homeowners will need to make contacting an A/C Repair service their number one priority.

A technician from a service company frequently will be able to make a guess as to the issue with the unit just by hearing how it is acting. However, most repair persons will conduct a thorough inspection of the unit to make sure they have correctly determined the problem. They also will look to make sure there are no other issues that need to be dealt with.

Many times the cause of an air conditioner not working is the A/C capacitor. This unit on the system helps in starting the motor systems on the unit. Once they are started, the capacitor is needed to help keep them running. It does this by storing electricity so the motor has power at all times. If this unit is not functioning correctly, the unit may not be able to start or continue running.

Many times, this unit will become heated when it is running. This, combined with high temperatures, can cause the fuses in the unit to be blown. When this occurs the unit may run, but it will not have enough power to cause the fan to move. This generally means the unit will make a humming noise, but the fan will remain stationary.

Sometimes, a homeowner can use a long stick to help move the fan to get it running. While this can be a temporary fix, it is generally best to contact an A/C Repair service company to come out and evaluate the problem. A technician will be able to determine if the unit is the problem and replace it if necessary. This is generally the best way to have the unit fixed so it works now and in the future as well.

If you are experiencing issues with your AC system, contacting a professional is the best way to have the situation evaluated and corrected. For more information, please contact Palm Harbor Heating & Air Conditioning.

Driver fined after following sat-nav to edge of cliff in West Yorkshire, England

Thursday, September 17, 2009

A driver has been fined after following the directions of his satellite navigation system, leading him to the edge of a massive cliff drop in West Yorkshire, England.

Robert Jones, who is 43 years old, appeared in Calderdale Magistrates Court on Tuesday, representing himself. He was prosecuted by Waseem Raja. Waseem told the court: “The defendant was using a TomTom satellite navigation system. The defendant followed that system to the letter, so much so it led him up a lane clearly unsuitable for motor vehicles.”

“The path was such it was not designed for use of motor vehicles yet Mr Jones slavishly continued to follow the satnav system to the point where his eyes and his brain must have been telling him otherwise to such a degree he was not exercising proper control of the vehicle.”

On March 22, 2009, Robert Jones was driving a BMW 5 Series and was trying to get to his home in Doncaster, South Yorkshire after staying with friends in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. He was unsure of the route home and so followed his satellite navigation system, which was in the car. He continued to follow instructions despite being told that the narrowing dirt track he was driving on was actually a road. At the time the petrol gauge in the car indicated that he had just seven miles of fuel left. Because of this, Jones was desperate to find a filling station. He became so distracted by the sat-nav that he didn’t realise his mistakes until he struck a fence on the edge of a 100 foot (30.5 metre) drop. The battery on his mobile phone had run out so he had to walk to a nearby village to get help.

In his defence, Robert told the court: “I might have been an idiot for taking the wrong road or carrying on but I have not driven without due care or attention. I’m sorry it happened. I certainly would not do it again. I drive 5,000 miles a week and I never have had a problem with it. I had no reason not to trust it.”

Jones was found guilty of driving without due care and attention. He was fined £370 (US$610) with £500 ($824) costs and ordered to pay a £15 ($24) victim surcharge. He also got six points on his licence and had to pay £1,000 ($1,624) in recovery charges.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.
