Late Indian politician’s son in critical condition after suspected drug overdose

Saturday, June 3, 2006

Rahul Mahajan’s condition has improved and has been taken off ventilator support. Rahul’s CT scan report is normal and his vital parameters have shown an improvement. He will however, be kept under observation for another 3 days. “The condition of Rahul Mahajan has gradually improved over the last 12 hours. After due assessment of clinical status and investigation, our team of doctors found his vital parameters improving,” a medical bulletin released by the Apollo Hospital said.

Friday, June 2, 2006

Rahul Mahajan, the son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan has been admitted to the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi in a critical state, apparently after a drug overdose. Rahul was found in an unconscious state in his father’s residence in New Delhi early today morning. Vivek Moitra, Pramod Mahajan’s secretary who was with Rahul at the party has been declared dead presumably as a result of the same drug. Police say the Rahul, Vivek and three other men were drinking champagne together and were also apparently consuming cocaine. This assumption is based of the fact that opiate traces were found in the deceased Mr. Moitra’s pocket.

Doctors described Rahul’s condition as “critical but stable”. They said that details regarding what led to his present condition would be revealed after the conduction of a toxicology test. Two domestic helps rushed the men to hospital in the early hours of today morning. The helps disturbed the scene by clearing up the glasses and the bottles. Traces of what seems to be cocaine were however found in one the glasses.

Rahul is currently on a ventilator and his condition will have to be closely monitored for the next couple of days. He was supposed to visit Assam tomorrow to immerse his father’s ashes in the Brahmaputra. Mr. Pramod Mahjan died about a month ago after being shot by his brother. Rahul was on anti-depressants as a result of this.

What Are The Most Popular Cell Phones?

By Adriana Noton

It’s nearly impossible to find someone without a cell phone. Both landlines and cell phones cost money, so it’s not hard to understand why people are only paying for their mobile option. All phones obviously allow you to receive and make calls, and now there isn’t a phone on the Market incapable of sending text messages, but some phones are wildly more popular than others. This deserves exploration.

Amongst businessmen, the phone of choice is the Blackberry. Not surprisingly, this is the most businesslike option in that it’s a no-nonsense email interface with the most popular keyboard. People required to send heavy amounts of long emails a day prefer this no frills phone. ‘Pinning’ is also a favourite feature unique to the Blackberry network. A popular feature from the bosses perspective (not so much from the employees necessarily!) is the ability to determine whether a sent message has been read. At first, Blackberries did not even come with a camera because it was simply known as the business phone, and most employers don’t want their people taking pictures or videos behind the scenes. This has since changed, but it speak to the degree to which Blackberry is known as the business phone.

Amongst teenagers and young adults there’s no doubt about the Iphones reigning popularity. This is because the device successfully transcends the mundane functions of a phone into a sleek, sophisticated object with capabilities expanding each day. Iphones don’t just access the internet, they transform it. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that, as a device, the Iphone is the internet incarnated. No other device so easily or totally reflects the character of the user. Everything can be customized and personalized, and the functions of the device are catered specifically to the owners’ interests and needs. The touch screens’ typing features have been ironed out in recent generations, addressing early complaints that it was a little difficult to use. It is different than the Blackberry’s raised letters with the clicking sound (one of the most popular Blackberry features) but Iphone users get used to their keyboards, and besides, they are so occupied by the innumerable ways of busying themselves that they don’t complain about typing. In fact, people are so enamored by Iphones that they overlook the occasional glitch and breakdown. Especially in the earlier generations, people attributed malfunctions to a single unfortunate incident, and not some larger pattern, even though Blackberries never really suffered the same problem at any time. In any case, this too has been smoothed out and Iphones are considerably more reliable.

When people need the most reliable, efficient means of communication they tend to look to the Blackberry. But the Iphone is ultimately more popular because it is substantially more than just a phone, and even with all the apps and cool software, it’s communication interface is reliable and easy to use. The extras you get with the Iphone aren’t merely a gimmick: millions of people can’t be wrong!

North Korea launches missile in ‘military drill’

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

According to the Japanese Defense Ministry, North Korea has fired a short-range missile today into the Sea of Japan. Officials believed it to be part of a regular exercise.

“North Korea fired a short-range missile in what appeared to be part of a military drill,” a Japanese Defense Ministry official was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.

A South Korean defense spokesman said such tests are routine.

“We don’t deny that North Korea fired a missile,” South Korean Army Colonel Ha Doo-chul, told Yonhap. “If it did, we regard it as a routine exercise.”

The test comes at the time when North Korea is inviting inspectors in to discuss its nuclear programs.

One million baby cribs recalled due to potentially fatal design flaw

Saturday, September 22, 2007

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced yesterday that Simplicity Inc. is recalling nearly one million baby cribs after two infant deaths have been linked to a design failure.

Simplicity Inc. supplies cribs to large American big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart Inc., and several other giant retailers including Target Corp. and Big Lots Inc.

A dangerous gap can be created if the drop-side of the crib has been installed upside-down, and thus becomes detached. That space can cause infants to be suffocated.

Parents are being urged by the company to check their Simplicity cribs to make sure the drop-side was installed correctly and is not a safety hazard. The cribs being recalled have these model numbers: 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760 and 8996.

The affected cribs cost between US$100 and $300, and were sold between January of 1998 through May of 2007.

Two separate deaths have been reported because the drop-side was installed upside down. Fifty-five non-fatal entrapment cases have been reported. And, the CPSC is now investigating a third infant death involving a newer-style crib.

Simplicity Inc. says the faulty cribs were made in China. However, according to CPSC, the recall is about the design flaws that the U.S. manufacturers designed into the product, not a made-in-China problem.

Wikinews interviews Christoph Bals of the NGO Germanwatch after conclusion of climate conference

Correction — February 25, 2008 Translation problems from German to English, see Talk page.

Thursday, December 27, 2007

A year ago I would have found the current outcome almost revolutionary. … A lot has been achieved, but the biggest hurdles are still in front of us.

With the Climate Conference in Bali having come to a successful conclusion, Wikinews journalist Sean Heron interviewed Christoph Bals from the German NGO Germanwatch on his opinion of the outcome, and an outlook on the future negotiations. Christoph is the Senior Political Executive of Germanwatch, Co-Author of the Climate protection-Index and did lobby work on Bali.
