British man fully “recovers” from HIV

Sunday, November 13, 2005

A 25 year old British man has been reported to have made a full recovery from the HIV virus . Andrew Stimpson did not take any drug treatments after being diagnosed with the virus in August 2002 and was found HIV negative in October 2003.

Stimpson’s two HIV tests were performed by the Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust. It has been reported that the hospital is standing by the validity of the two tests that have so far been performed. The hospital would like to perform additional tests that might reveal an explanation for the two contradictory test results. Tests used for diagnosis of HIV infection can produce false positive results. When this happens, additional testing is required in order to determine if there ever was an actual infection. Some news reports suggest that Stimpson may have had contact with someone known to be HIV-positive and that multiple HIV tests performed by a clinic all gave positive results for Stimpson before he was first tested by the Chelsea and Westminster hospital. However, Michael Hopkin of the British journal Nature, has reported that while Stimpson tested positive for antibodies to HIV in 2002, “tests done during more than two dozen visits in 2003 and 2004 proved negative for the antibodies”. This suggests that either HIV infection took an unusual course in Stimpson or the original test results indicating infection were a false positive.

Many similar cases have been reported in Africa, where the virus is widespread. Due to poor medical facilities all of these reports have been largely anecdotal—Mr Stimpson represents the first well documented case. However, until additional tests are performed it is impossible to know if the second test was a false negative. Dr. Andrew Grulich, who has a PhD in epidemiology and works at the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research at the University of New South Wales has expressed doubt that Stimpson was cured of an HIV infection. In some infected patients, HIV levels can fall to undetectably low levels until their immune system is defeated and virus levels begin to rise.

This discovery may offer a promising new window into how the virus works and furthers hopes that one day a vaccine and/or cure will be found for the disease that is carried by around 35 million people worldwide.

MS-13 “gangsters” and Arizona “vigilantes” prepare to rumble

Thursday, March 31, 2005

Ebner Anivel Rivera-Paz, A leader of the vicious Mara Salvatruchas(MS-13) gang, has issued orders from his prison cell for his followers to teach the American “Minutemen” volunteers a lesson when they begin patrolling the Mexican border tomorrow.

MS-13 gang members are considered to be America’s most violent gang with such acts of barbarism as to “cut off the testicles of their enemies and feed them to their vicious dogs” and “cut the heads off their opponents to play soccer with them”. However, such allegations of brutality doesn’t seem to frighten the “Minutemen” who are a group of Americans who are organizing more than 1,000 volunteers to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border beginning April 1st. They have been called vigilantes by Presidents Bush and Fox and sometimes sarcastically refer to themselves as “undocumented border patrol agents”. James Gilchrist, a Vietnam veteran and spokesman for the minutemen in response to the MS-13 threat; “We’re not worried because half of our recruits are retired trained combat soldiers..they(MS-13) are just a bunch of punks.”

MS-13 gang now has about 20,000 members nationwide and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has begun to focus on the gang with an initiative they call “Operation Community Shield”. The very existence of MS-13 is considered by the Conservative Voice to be a direct consequence of the USA government’s 1980’s policies in Central America; “the chickens are coming home to roost.Its(MS-13) members are the sons of immigrants from El Salvador and other Central American countries that were forced to flee because of the CIA instigated war during the Reagan Administration that completely destroyed the physical, economic, social, religious and cultural infrastructure of the region. MS-13 was founded in Los Angeles by the offspring of the immigrants for protection.”

Different Uses Of Acrylic Display Risers

By Kelley Wilson

Acrylic display risers are used in many different types of places. The places that use these are doing so because they need both, functionality and looks. If they didn’t care too much about presentation, they would use a more basic model of plastic displays.

This particular type really catches the eye of the customer and shows off the products wonderfully. Some acrylic display risers come separate from each other, allowing the person to place them in any order they like. There are a number of reasons that store owners opt to use this type of feature rather than other similar styles.

One of the more common and basic models that people can find in just about any type of business is the kind that holds cards or magazines. People can find these styles in doctor’s offices or somewhere that several people will have to wait for a period of time.

These acrylic display risers neatly hold several different magazines or cards at one time. Giving people that are waiting a good variety or reading material is always a good idea.

For the smaller business cards, a person can look at a few different cards all in one place. It looks good and keeps the table or counter clutter free.

Pedestals are a unique version of risers. They are the kind that has a tube piece standing upright, and it will have a flat surface on top of the tube.

With each being at a different level, it can show off items very effectively. This type of model will typically have smaller items that do not have a lot of weight to them such as jewelry.

The table models come in a small or large size to accommodate the needs of the business owner. They work very similar to the pedestals, except they have four tubes on each flat surface to support it rather than just one. These acrylic display risers can hold more weight.

Probably the most commonly used model is the stairstep. These can be any number of lengths, but this simple design can exhibit just about any product very efficiently.

The purpose of these types of displays is to show off a variety of products inside of a small amount of space. Stacking is the obvious choice when a person is trying to achieve this. Just as they do in football stadiums and today’s movie theaters, a store owner can stack numerous items up as if they are in the bleachers.

Why even use acrylic display risers? When customers walk into a store and see a bunch of products just thrown and scattered all over the check-out counter, they will think it is all cheap junk and not even stop to look at the items.

Selling is all about presentation. If the store owner takes pride in their presentation, the customer will be more likely to spend their hard earned money there. It doesn’t matter if it is inside of a doughnut shop, if they are using these types of risers, then the customer automatically knows they are true professionals and take pride in their product.

Tunisian Prime Minister signs decree to ban face veils in public institutions, government offices

Monday, July 8, 2019

On Friday, Youssef Chahed, the Prime Minister of Tunisia, signed a government decree banning anyone wearing a niqab from entering a public institution or government offices. A niqab is a face-veil, which covers almost the entire face, and is commonly worn by Muslim females as a religious garment.

“Chahed signed a government decree that bars any person with an undisclosed face from access to public headquarters, administrations, institutions, for security reasons”, a government official said. This decision comes after a couple of suicide bombings took place in the country’s capital, Tunis, last month. Reportedly, two people were killed and at least eight people were injured in a suicide bombing that happened on June 27. According to eyewitness reports, the suicide bomber wore a face veil covering, the niqab. In the span of one week, at least three suicide bombings took place in Tunisia. The militant organisation, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, claimed responsibility for all three attacks.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse, the president of the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights, Jamel Msallem, said, “We are for the freedom to dress, but today with the current situation and the terrorist threats in Tunisia and across the region we find justifications for this decision”. A member of the Tunisian Parliament, Samir Dilou said, “Tunisia is facing terrorist attacks, so every measure which is led by security motives is understandable”.

After an attack in the capital city in 2015, a bill was proposed in 2016 for banning the niqab, but was not passed. Souhail Alouini, a member of Parliament, said, “We proposed a bill in 2016 about this subject and it has still not been debated […] Maybe it is time now.”

Tunisia’s neighbouring Muslim-majority African countries including Algeria and Morocco have cited security concerns to impose bans on niqabs. Previously, another Islamic religious garment, the hijab, was banned in Tunisian public offices during Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s Presidency. That ban was lifted in 2011.

Wikinews interviews Jo Jorgensen, U.S. Libertarian Party presidential nominee

Thursday, October 29, 2020

Professor Jo Jorgensen of South Carolina, the U.S. Libertarian Party’s 2020 presidential nominee, answered some questions about her campaign from Wikinews accredited reporter William S. Saturn.

Jorgensen is a psychology professor at Clemson University.   In 1992, with the Libertarian Party’s backing, she ran for public office, seeking South Carolina’s 4th congressional seat in the United States House of Representatives. She finished the race in third place with almost 2.16 percent of the total vote. Four years later, the Libertarian Party tapped Jorgensen to be its vice presidential nominee. She joined a ticket with the late Harry Browne. Browne-Jorgensen appeared on every state ballot and received a total of 485,798 votes, which was roughly 0.5 percent. This marked the best performance for the party since 1980 and would not be topped percentage-wise until 2012 when former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson attained 0.99 percent of the vote. Johnson bested that performance in 2016 as the party’s presidential nominee for a second time, earning 3.27 percent of the vote, the highest percentage for the party since its 1971 inception.

For the 2020 nomination, Jorgensen navigated through a primary campaign that featured the short-lived campaigns of former Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee and Congressman Justin Amash of Michigan, the first sitting Congressman to be a member of the Libertarian Party. At the virtual 2020 Libertarian National Convention, Jorgensen won the nomination on the fourth ballot, edging attorney Jacob Hornberger, performance artist Vermin Supreme and activist Adam Kokesh, among others. Podcaster Spike Cohen, originally the running mate of Supreme, was picked to be the party’s vice presidential nominee. Cohen spoke to Wikinews back in June. The Jorgensen-Cohen ticket has since secured ballot access in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

As a libertarian, an ideology that advocates for lesser government, both in the social and economic realms, Jorgensen’s issue positions include a mix of traditionally liberal and conservative stances. She supports both LGBT rights and gun rights. She opposes the police state and the taxing authority equally. And, she supports an open immigration policy while arguing against the welfare state.

With Wikinews, Jorgensen discusses her background, COVID-19, her potential cabinet, gridlock, and an assortment of issues including climate change, foreign affairs, free speech, and race relations.

Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

Rapid Tracker: The App That Keeps Your Family Safe!

RapidTracker: The App That Keeps Your Family Safe!

by

Safety is soon turning into one of the biggest concerns of our lives, and no matter where we are, we always worry about our loved ones until they are back and safe at home with us. Given just how much we depend on our smartphones and carry them with us all day, everywhere, it s no wonder then how the humble smartphone can become our security accessory as well.

Keep a tab on your family members movements

RapidProtect s RapidTracker app is one such security app that lets users keep a tab on the whereabouts and security of their families. Using its inbuilt GPS tracking capabilities, the app allows for setting geo-fencing, geo-points and even lets users upload photos through its photo check-in feature to let users know where each member of their families is at any point of time.

RapidTracker is a cloud-based app with which users can send out safety status updates to all family members and even set emergency alerts that can be sent out in times of distress. A Panic Button can be set on the mobile devices, which trigger the sending out of these alerts to emergency contacts as well as emergency services.

Go social and collaborate with RapidTracker

The app integrates with GTalk to let users chat with their family members in real-time. In addition, users can even access their check-in history and message vaults to analyze patterns. Users can also log-in using a password to the Web version of the app to access this history.

It helps users collaborate with their family members throughout the day even if they are not physically present around each other, letting them share updates about weather, photo check-ins of places they visit and even share photos with each other.

RapidTracker also makes use of social media for security through its integration with social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Once integrated, the app offers users the option to post status updates using its interface.

Another great feature is location tagging so that users are always in the know about where each member of their family is located and can be reached at any point of time. But there s more to this app it s not just a collaboration-based GPS tracker app. The RapidTracker app also has the capability to alter users about any impending natural disasters they could experience at their locations, like snow and rain, to let them prepare and stay safe.

Specify safe areas for your family

The geo-fencing feature lets you set a specific territory or perimeter within which your family can travel safely, so that the app alerts you in case any member travels outside this specified area. Geo-points of frequently visited places like offices and schools can also be fed into the app so that you get alerts every time the family members travel outside these points.

Not only does the app let users track their family members movement, but it also provides information about registered sex offenders in a particular region, which comes in handy when users move to a new city or location. For now, this feature works only within the U.S. region.

RapidTracker can be downloaded for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Brew, Sybmian smartphones and even ordinary J2ME based mobile phones.

New Zealand dog saves five children; receives international attention

Saturday, May 5, 2007

A small, “nicely trained” Jack Russell Terrier gave his life to help save a group of five children from two aggressive pitbulls last Sunday in Manaia, Taranaki, New Zealand.

The dog named George is being described as a hero, gathering a huge amount of international media interest in the process.

The dog suffered massive injuries that the vet had never seen to that extent before, which resulted in 69-year-old Alan Gay, the dog’s owner, allowing George to be put down. He now regrets this decision.

The two pitbulls rushed at the group of children that George was following to the dairy, including a four-year-old. George then started barking loudly at the pair of dogs, and put himself between the dogs and the children. Mr Gay told Fox News, “If it wasn’t for George, those kids would have copped it.”

Despite having received offers of new dogs, Mr Gay has said that he will wait a while before getting another Jack Russell Terrier, as he is afraid it could happen again.

It is also believed that the two attacking dogs, which have been destroyed, were bred to be aggressive, including being fed the drug methamphetamine, commonly referred to as “P” in New Zealand.

Mr Gay has said that Manaia has had a problem with stray dogs before, but he never expected that George would become a victim.

One story ran in USA Today, which prompted over 120 comments, and one reader to personally call Alan Gay expressing their condolences.

Responding to the huge amount of media interest, Mr Gay said, “This really surprises me, and it’s marvellous. I never expected this … I’m surprised it got around the world as it did.” He says he has been getting a huge amount of phone calls from the media and the public. “The phone has been going since about half past seven this morning. Every time I hang up it rings again. It’s worn out; I might have to get a new one.”

John Constable painting location mystery solved after 195 years

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The mystery of the location of a viewpoint used by English painter John Constable has been solved, after nearly 200 years. The Stour Valley and Dedham Church was painted in Suffolk, England, between 1814 and 1815, but changes to the landscape meant that the spot he chose was not known, despite the best efforts of historians and art experts.

Now the puzzle has been answered. Martin Atkinson, who works for the National Trust as property manager for East Suffolk, used clues from the painting and looked at old maps to track down the viewpoint. Trees had grown, a hedgerow had been planted and boundaries had moved or disappeared, but Atkinson eventually worked out where Constable had stood. He said, “When I discovered that I had worked out the location where Constable painted this particular masterpiece, I couldn’t believe it. All the pieces of the jigsaw finally fitted together.”

Atkinson used an 1817 map of East Bergholt, where Constable grew up, as a reference point, but found that the view would have changed not long after the painting was completed. “The foreground didn’t fit at all, it was quite unusual as we know Constable painted it in the open air so he would have been standing in the scene. The hedgerow in his work no longer exists and there’s another hedgerow that runs across the scene today which wasn’t there. When you stand on the road on which he would have stood, and use the oak tree as a reference point, you see the same view. It’s great to see where an old master stood – and be inspired by the same view,” he said.

Suffolk, where Constable painted many of his finest paintings, is often called “Constable country”. Most, but not all, of the locations that Constable depicted are known. The picture is now housed in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts.

Cordyceps Sinensis: Probing On Potential Health Benefits

Cordyceps Sinensis: Probing on Potential Health Benefits

by

mackshepperson

Ophiocordyceps sinensis or simply Cordyceps sinensis is one of the best known species of the sac fungus genus Ophiocordyceps. Colloquially known as caterpillar fungus because of its parasitic relationship with the larva or caterpillar of a ghost moth genus Thitarodes, Cordyceps sinensis is known in the West as a medicinal mushroom for its historic use in treating a number of prominent ailments, such as fatigue and cancer. This mushroom is also used as an aphrodisiac.

Several species of ghost moth genus Thitarodes live underground on alpine grass and shrub lands on the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas. They spend around five years underground before pupating. As caterpillar, the soon ghost moths feed on grass roots, but are eventually attacked, killed, and mummified by the fungus Cordyceps sinensis. The attack is followed by filling the caterpillar\’s body with mycelia, from which the mushroom grows and emerges from the ground.

Cordyceps sinensis is believed many Tibetan practitioners to have an outstanding balance of yin and yang, a concept that describes the interdependence of seemingly contrary forces. This belief is based mainly on the basic quality of Cordyceps sinensis as both vegetable and animal. Today, the mushroom\’s product can be produced artificially from mycelium grown in grains, but not from the Thitarodes larva.

Experiments on the effect of cordyceps sinensis extract have revealed its ability to have an anti-depressant effect. Further research has also identified an ability to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic. This effect eventually protects the liver, muscles, and fat tissues. Cordyceps sinensis extract is ideal for people who have insulin resistance.

Cordyceps sinensis was first globally credited for its health benefits in 1993 when three female athletes broke 5 world records in track and field during the Chinese National Games, which their coach described as an effect of taking

cordyceps sinensis extract

besides turtle blood. Many athletes today recognize the potent effect of Cordyceps in their stamina and endurance. The extract can also help revitalize the organs in the body, which later made elderly people prefer it to other supplements.

Other research on Cordyceps sinensis has shown its adaptogenic properties. An herb is considered an adaptogen if it adapts to help the body in what it needs, but does not leave any side effect. This has been proven through swim test with mice, which showed that the mice that were fed with

cordyceps sinensis extract

swam longer than the control group.

You can get more relevant information about Cordyceps extract or
