Wikinews Shorts: April 19, 2007

A compilation of brief news reports for Thursday, April 19, 2007.

Wikinews reported previously on an Internet outage in New Zealand that lasted for over five hours. Telecom New Zealand, the company that owns and operates the “local loop”, said that they will review compensation for its customers on a case-by-case basis.

A wholesale ISP is attempting to give its subscribers compensation for the outage. CallPlus says that it is asking Telecom for the thousands of dollars it needs to pass on to its affected customers. They doubt Telecom will give them the money needed.

Meetings are underway at NATO headquarters in an attempt to reassure Russia that the missile defence plans pose no threat. The United States maintains the system is to protect against missiles from rogue states, whereas Russia sees the system as compromising its strategic interests in the region.

In today’s talks NATO allies encouraged the United States to make the planned anti-missile shield capable of covering all of Europe. They did this without committing themselves to joining the project.

Reaction to the proposed system in European states has been mixed.

Irrigation water to a substantial proportion of Australia’s farming regions could be cut due to drought conditions, Australian PM John Howard has warned.

Mr Howard’s comments concerned the Murray-Darling Basin, one of the largest systems in Australia. “If it doesn’t rain in sufficient volume over the next six to eight weeks, there will be no water allocations for irrigation purposes in the basin”, adding that the drought conditions could continue until May 2008.

He continued “It is a grim situation, and there is no point in pretending to Australia otherwise,” he said. “We must all hope and pray there is rain.”

Russia, in coordination with the government of the United States and Canada, is planning to build a tunnel from Russia to Alaska, Viktor Razbegin, deputy head of industrial research at the Russian Economy Ministry, told reporters in Moscow Wednesday.

The tunnel is budgeted to cost US$65 billion and would take 10 to 15 years to build. The tunnel is to provide train and automobile transport between Alaska and the Russian Far East, and to carry petroleum and natural gas pipelines, and high-voltage electrical cable.

The proposed tunnel is 64 miles long, or about 100 kilometers, in total, and is designed to link with two islands in the Bering Strait. The project is expected to have a very positive economic effect in the area.

Derek Brower, an energy market expert, called the project “absurd” and suggested the Russian government is playing political games to threaten its European customers to sign energy deals.

“I’ve never heard of this plan,” said Sergei Grigoryev, Vice President of oil pipeline monopoly Transneft.

“To be honest, anyone who look[s] at the map will realize that the project is too hard to implement,” an anonymous government source told Reuters.

Delta II launches GPS IIR-19 satellite

Saturday, March 15, 2008

A Delta II rocket launched at 06:10 GMT this morning, with the GPS IIR-19 navigation satellite. The spacecraft, which forms part of the US Air Force’s NAVSTAR Global Positioning System, has been successfully delivered into a Medium Earth orbit.

The rocket flew in the 7925-9.5 configuration, with 9 GEM-40 solid-rocket boosters, an Extra Extended Long Tank Thor first stage, a Delta-K second stage, a Star 48B third stage, and a 9.5 ft (2.9m) diameter payload fairing. Launch was conducted by United Launch Alliance (ULA).

GPS IIR-19, also known as IIM-6 and SVN-48, will be placed in plane A, slot 4, replacing the GPS IIA-15 satellite. IIA-15 was launched in September 1992, and has been operating for over twice its design life. This was the 135th launch of the Delta II, and the twelfth orbital launch of 2008.

Are Timeshares Really Worth The Investment? What You Should Know Before Buying

By Nick Stoles

If you think only the rich can afford to buy their own vacation home, you’ve probably never heard of timeshares. Timeshares has actually made it possible for average folks to buy a share of a home, a vacation villa, a resort or a condo unit. But are they really worth the investment? Here are things you need to know:

What are timeshares?

A timeshare is one type of real property ownership, in which a person buys a share. This share gives him the right of use for that property. You don’t actually buy the property – you buy the right to use it for a specified period of time. This period of time is fixed, usually a week of every year or every other year, depending on the agreement. This means that for every type of property there is, there are multiple parties that have the rights of usage.

The term ‘timeshare’ can also be used to refer to real properties sold or rented in this manner. They could either be offered as part-ownership or right-to-use/lease. The latter doesn’t give the owner of the share any form of ownership claim to the property.

Why you might want it

A timeshare works well with people who regularly go on vacations each year and/or those who want to own vacation properties. It’s an excellent choice in case you and your family wish to enjoy time off at a particular resort and could mean a lot of savings on your part because the accommodation is already covered by your purchase of the share/s.

A timeshare can also be used in other ways. Depending on the type you bought, you could, for example, rent it out for a profit, sell it or give it as a gift to someone else.

Is it worth the investment?

A timeshare is not exactly an investment in the sense that it does not appreciate in value over time. In fact, in case you want to sell your timeshare in the future, there’s a good chance you might even have to sell it at a loss.

Furthermore, expect to pay for annual expenses to cover for administration, management and maintenance of the property. As to how much this is will depend heavily on the type of unit you have, its location and popularity.

So when is it a good investment?

A timeshare can be worth the investment for you if you travel frequently and stay in hotels. If there’s one or a few locations that you go to regularly or at least several times a year, buying a timeshare can help you save a few hundreds to a several thousand dollars each year.

A timeshare can also be worth the investment if the location is right. If you bought a timeshare resort condo unit in Hawaii but live in Ohio and frequently vacation in Florida or California, it won’t be of much use to you at all. Unless, of course, you rent it out, in which case you could earn. This is what many timeshare owners do, not only to turn a bit of profit but also to pay for their timeshare fees. However, that will depend of course on how popular the location and facilities included in your timeshare are. It will only have a good potential for generating income from rentals if there are people who find it attractive enough to actually rent.

So is a timeshare worth the investment? That will really depend on the type of circumstances involved in your case. Before buying a timeshare, consider the points discussed above so you make a more informed decision.

Plane crashes into office block in Austin, Texas

Thursday, February 18, 2010

A small plane crashed into a building, which was one of the Echelon office complex, in north Austin, Texas this morning at 09:56 local time (1456 UTC).

Federal officials say the plane owner was Joseph Andrew Stack III; presumed to be the pilot who set his house on fire on the 1800 block of Dapplegrey Lane in north Austin an hour earlier. He then drove to Georgetown Municipal Airport, approximately 20 miles away, took off and then crashed his private plane into the Echelon complex.

The Federal Aviation Authority indicated the light aircraft was a Piper Cherokee PA-28, as did news reports and eye witnesses. The FAA said the plane had no flight plan and was under Visual Flight Rules.

Mr. Stack committed suicide, and a suicide note has been located. Mr. Stack’s suicide note mentions anti-government and anti-corporate ideals, as well as problems with the Internal Revenue Service and that he lost money in the Enron scandal. Although the incident was intentional, a Department of Homeland Security official said that terrorism is not suspected. The online host of the note, T35 Hosting, later removed it in its entirety after the FBI requested its censorship. However, Wikinews has preserved the full text of the letter.

Austin Fire Department reported around 1100 local time (1600 UTC) that two people were transported to local hospitals and one was unaccounted for. One man was admitted at a local hospital under serious condition for smoke inhalation. The other man suffered from second-degree burns on 25% of his back and has been transported by helicopter to Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio and is said to be in stable condition.

The seven-story Echelon Building One is located on 9430 Research Boulevard and contains Internal Revenue Service offices. The Echelon building complex houses a number of federal offices, including Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation. Research Boulevard is the service road of U.S. Route 183. The incident has caused severe backups on both Research Boulevard and Route 183.

A witness told The Austin Statesman that he saw the plane flying lower than usual, then it made a sharp turn and hit the building.

An Austin County EMS official, James Shamard, said that smoke is visible from at least a mile from the crash site. Another official for the Austin Fire Department said that two persons who were working in the building are still unaccounted for.

MSNBC reports that there was some form of domestic dispute between Mr. Stack and his wife before the incident. He then reportedly used gasoline to light his house on fire. When the fire department arrived, they rescued his wife and teenage daughter.

According to Jerry Cullen, a pilot and former flight instructor who witnessed the crash, the plane was traveling at high speed at time of impact.

Irish rock band The Cranberries’ lead singer Dolores O’Riordan dies at 46

Thursday, January 18, 2018

On Monday, 46-year-old Dolores O’Riordan, lead singer of Irish rock band The Cranberries, was found dead, her publicist Lindsey Holmes confirmed; reports suggested she was found in her room at the London Hilton on Park Lane hotel. O’Riordan’s agent said she was in London, England, for a recording session. According to the police, her death was considered “unexplained” and no cause of death disclosed, though it was to be investigated.

Later one of the richest women of Ireland, O’Riordan joined the rock band, then known as “the Cranberry Saw Us”, as a teenager around 1989, after Niall Quinn had left the band. Also featuring drummer Fergal Lawler, bassist Mike Hogan and his brother Noel Hogan, the lead guitarist, the band released their first album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? in 1993. The debut album featuring single Linger was an international success. The band went on to release six more albums featuring O’Riordan’s voice, including Something Else, which was released last year.

A year later, in 1994, the band released their second studio album, No Need to Argue, which featured the song Zombie, a song about bombings related to Northern Ireland. Zombie topped the singles charts in various countries. In the same year, O’Riordan married Don Burton, sometime manager of the Duran Duran band. Their third album, To the Faithful Departed, was released in 1996. The album did not receive the acclamation of the first two.

In 2003, the band split, and it was reunited in 2009. During those six years, O’Riordan released two solo albums — Are You Listening? in 2007 and No Baggage in 2009. 2012’s Roses was the first album The Cranberries released after reunification.

Last year, O’Riordan revealed through London’s Metro newspaper she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She also spoke of suffering from depression to The Irish News. In 2014, the singer was involved in assaulting a flight attendant and three police officials on a flight from New York, US to Ireland. She was fined €6000 (US$6600) after she pleaded guilty; medical reports said she suffered from mental illness during that incident. Last year, the band’s tour to North America and Europe for Something Else was cancelled partway through as O’Riordan suffered from a back problem.

After announcement of O’Riordan’s death, Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar tweeted, “For anyone who grew up in Ireland in the 1990s, Dolores O’Riordan was the voice of a generation. As the female lead singer of a hugely successful rock band, she blazed a trail and might just have been Limerick’s greatest ever rock star. RIP.”

The official twitter handle of The Cranberries posted a tweet saying, “We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today.”

Born on September 6, 1971 in Ballybricken, a town in southeastern Ireland, O’Riordan had six older siblings. She wrote songs since the age of twelve. James Walton, a priest from her home area, said, “The plan is for her to be buried here at home. When that will be will depend on when her body is released.”

Dolores O’Riordan is survived by three children and ex-husband Don Burton.

Raw Food: Tools For Preparation}

Raw Food: Tools for preparation

by

Nicholas Tan

You dont need to make a huge investment in eating raw and living foods. In fact, youll probably be saving money by cutting back on highly processed convenience foods. All that high-fat, high-sodium microwaveable foods are pricey, too!

If youre new to this, eating raw foods isnt just about putting something different in you mouth. Its an experience that goes beyond the act of eating. When youre shopping for your food, make it an aesthetic experience as well. Fill your cart up with all the colors of these delicious live foods.

Invest in a good juicer. There are cooks catalogues that carry them. Shop online. Maybe you can find a good used juicer on an auction site. A juicer is NOT really a blender. Its much more powerful because it needs to liquefy foods that can be highly fibrous.

You want some good knives too, for cutting up your fruits and vegetables. Invest in a few good ones. Turn the work of chopping up your food into something artistic.

If you dont have a steamer, invest in one of those too, so you can lightly steam your vegetables if you want. Buy specific types of steamers. Weve seen an asparagus steamer thats especially designed to steam the woody bottoms more than the tender tips.

Get a few chopping tools that are also garnishing tools. Its just as easy to cut up carrots with a ridged cutting knife to make them more attractive. There are special slicers that get your fruits and veggies really thin and therefore more fun to eat.

And do invest in a new cutting board. You dont want to use the same cutting board for all your fresh new foods that youve used through the years to cut up chicken or other foods. No matter how much you scrub, your cutting board can absorb bacteria. Start fresh in all things not just your food!

Diet Herbs: Licorice, Milk Thistle, Mustard Seed, Parsley, Passion Flower And Plantain

By Georg Kharchenko

Licorice

You probably think of licorice as a black, chewy candy, but it is also an important herb used to treat inflammation and bronchial congestion. Licorice is derived from the roots and underground stem of a European plant and is available in capsules, powders, lozenges, and extracts. A few natural weight-loss supplements use it as an ingredient in tiny quantities.

The active compound in licorice responsible for its therapeutic benefits is glycyrrhizin, which gives the herb its sweetness. Licorice also contains an anti-oxidant that may help prevent hardening of the arteries (technically known as atherosclerosis). There are no weight-loss benefits linked to licorice or to glycyrrhizin, however.

Supplementing with high or long-term doses of licorice extracts containing glycyrrhizin is dangerous because it may aggravate heart or kidney problems. Natural weight-loss supplements with licorice contain only traces of the extract, however. A modified form of licorice called DGL is considered safer.

Milk Thistle

Derived from a weed like plant grown in the Mediterranean area, this herb has been used as liver protectant since ancient times.

For more than 60 years, hundreds of studies have confirmed milk thistle’s benefit on liver health. Most supplements contain standardized extracts of the herb’s active ingredient, silymarin, and are used to treat cirrhosis, hepatitis, and other liver diseases, particularly in Europe. Where weight loss is concerned, milk thistle is thought to be an herbal lipotropic that helps remove fatty substances from the liver.

Supplementing with milk thistle and products containing it appears to be safe.

Mustard Seed

The seed of the mustard plant is ground into a powder and often is found as an ingredient in natural weight-loss supplements. It is high in the mineral magnesium.

Though it is a common ingredient in weight-loss products, mustard seed powder has no proven role in weight control.

Mustard seed powder is considered safe.

Parsley

You know it best as a garnish on your dinner plate, but parsley has a reputation as a healer dating back to ancient times. And no wonder. It is very nutritious, rich in vitamin A, folic acid, iron, and other minerals.

Therapeutically, parsley can decrease blood pressure and aid indigestion. It is a proven natural diuretic and thus may produce a slight loss of water weight.

Parsley is considered very safe.

Passion Flower

Passion flower is a perennial vine that grows in the eastern United States and is available as an herbal remedy.

The herb exerts a sedative action, and has been found to relieve anxiety and reduce high blood pressure. At least one natural weight-loss supplement on the market lists passion flower as an ingredient, but there is no proof that it has any effect on weight loss. However, passion flower may help curb stress-related eating binges.

Passion flower appears to be safe, and the German Commission E has officially approved it for nervous anxiety.

Plaintain

Plantain is a leafy plant approved by The German Commission E for treating sore throat, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, and skin inflammation. The herb acts mainly as an astringent and an antibacterial.

An Italian study has confirmed a weight-loss effect with plantain. Women who were severely obese (at least 60 percent over their recommended weight) supplemented with 3 grams of plantain in water half an hour prior to meals. The plantain-supplemented group lost more weight than a control group who simply cut calories. Supposedly, plantain reduces the absorption of fats and makes you feel full which would explain its weight-loss benefit.

In 1977, the FDA issued a warning to consumers that they should stop using dietary supplements with plantain because the products may contain a toxic, digitalis-like substance. Digitalis is the active ingredient in some prescription heart medicines and a powerful heart stimulant. Digitalis can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, low blood pressure, and abnormal heart rate and rhythm, including cardiac arrest.

Reportedly, the substance was detected in samples of raw material labeled as plantain and used in herbal laxatives and tea. The FDA swung into action after receiving a report of a life-threatening heart abnormality in a young woman who had supplemented with a product containing plantain. The news on plantain makes it potentially deadly and not to be fooled with if you’re trying to lose weight.
