Fire kills eleven at oil worker housing in Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia

Monday, August 31, 2015

A fire in the eastern Saudi city of Alkhobar tore through a housing complex for oil workers yesterday, killing eleven, according to civil officials.

The Radium complex is rented by oil firm Aramco for their employees. According to nearby resident Mohammed Siddique the fire broke out early in the morning. Siddique says the building contains locals, as well as Westerners and Asians. The cause is unclear but the civil defence ministry tweeted “Cars and furniture caught fire in the basement of one of the towers”.

Over 200 people were injured. Firefighters scaled the burning tower on ladders, and helicopters were on-scene. Other towers in the complex were evacuated. Thick smoke from the blaze complicated rescue efforts.

Aramco CEO Amin H. Nasser said the firm is “deeply saddened to learn of the fatalities and injuries. We offer heartfelt condolences to the families. Our immediate priority is to provide full support to those affected by this tragic incident.” Aramco, which produces and exports more crude oil than any competitor worldwide, say the fire is under investigation.

Things everyone should know before opting for a frameless pool fence and cheap glass fencing gold co

by

Vikram KumarThe day you decided that you were going to buy your own home might have been one of the happiest days of your lifetime but it was also the day when you started dreaming about the pool you were going to get installed. On one hand, you have started imagining what your days would be like sitting by the pool side sipping on your martini after a long day of hard work, there is also a part of you who knows that you need to get a fence installed in order to protect your children from accidents. Even if you don’t have children, consider this: No new home owner would want to walk up to his pool only to find dead rats drowning in it. However, a wooden fence which you use to mark your garden would not serve the purpose in case of your pool since you don’t want anything obstructing the view of the beauty of the clear blue waters that your guests would be admiring once they step into your house. This is the reason why a frameless pool fence and cheap glass fencing gold coast are your best options but before you take the plunge, literally and otherwise, here are some things you need to be cautious about. When you ask a brand to do your install a cheap glass fencing gold coast in your home make sure that they know everything that there is to know about the regulations in your area regarding pool fencing. If you want to save yourself from paying a hefty amount of fine due to legal trouble somewhere down the line, ensure the frameless pool fence follows the guidelines that your locality has in place. Check to see whether the pool height is about 1200 mm or whatever height you think might be impossible to climb up.For those who have grown up without fences around their pools might doubt the need of glass fences but once you get to experience its practical uses on a first-hand basis, you would be converted into a believer. Just think of how nice it would be to enjoy some time in the pool while having the view of nature through the glass panes. Though it looks fragile, it has been proven that it is strong and safe. It is not the same glass that goes into making your wine glasses or even your windows but instead glass which has gone through toughening and has crossed several safety standard tests are the only ones which are used. Taking care of it afterwards would not be an issue as you just need some soapy water and a brush on the weekends to clean away all the dirt and dust which might have accumulated over the span of a week.Don’t be alarmed if the company asks you to pay some more money for glass fences. They are not trying to cheat you out of your hard-earned money but rather they are trying their best to find the right option for you so that your pool side looks like it came out of the cover of a lifestyle magazine. Looking for the magnificent, crystal clear view that a glass fence offers but aren’t ready to pay so much money? Ask the experts whether a semi frameless glass fencing would do the job or not. Frameless Pool Fence

and

Cheap Glass Fencing Gold Coast

are great to have in your house as long as you check whether the company who installs it will deliver quality results in minimum time.

Voluntary sterilization of poor women proposed by Louisiana state legislator

Thursday, September 25, 2008

A Louisiana representative has proposed a controversial solution to “generational welfare,” which would pay women on welfare to get sterilization. Republican John LaBruzzo said he thought of the idea because of his constituents’ outrage over paying for welfare.

“You have these people who are just fed up with working their buns off to try to provide for their own family and being forced by the government [to] provide for others’ families who just want to have unlimited kids”, he commented. He is currently working with Baton Rouge to gather data in support of his proposal.

The idea, which LaBruzzo has not finished forming, would award any woman on government assistance a check of $1,000 if she gets a tubal ligation operation. LaBruzzo is also considering rewarding sterilization in poor men and giving tax incentives for higher-income families to have more children.

LaBruzzo, who is pro-life, said that the people “on the other side of the political spectrum are pro-choice. Well, let’s give these people the ability to choose.”

While LaBruzzo has stated that he has received an outpouring of support over his idea, the ACLU spoke out against the proposal and called it a “meanspirited attempt to eliminate the poor.” Planned Parenthood representative Julie Mickelberry called it a “bribery”, suggesting a solution which attacked the root of the problem was needed and that the representative needed to “go back to addressing issues of education about unintended pregnancy and opening healthcare access.”

Southern Australian munitions factory explodes

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

An Australian munitions factory exploded in South Australia. Two people were killed, another two were injured and one is still missing.

The factory produced explosives for quarrying, civil engineering and the military.

The explosion leveled everything within 100 metres and could be heard from 70km away.

Emergency services have been held back to a one kilometre radius of the factory until an explosives expert from Adelaide could come.

“It’s very dangerous, so we’re holding back,” police inspector Phil Warwick said, “It’s an explosives factory. All right it’s exploded, but that doesn’t mean all the explosives have gone. There’s still smoke coming from the area, which means there must be fire or heat. Put them (remaining explosives and fire) together and we could have another (explosion).”

Super Woman

Super WomanRobert Elias NajemySituations & Lessons SeriesKatherine is very conscientious, a hard worker and reliable in all cases. At work and at home, she can be depended on to get things done. She often stays overtime, usually alone at the office in order to get her work done. When she gets home, she immediately immerses herself in cooking, cleaning, washing dishes, etc. Although the others are home even before she is, they do not even think of helping out. Katherine will do all this. She is a perfectionist, and although sometimes complains that no one helps, she in fact cannot relax when they do something. First of all, they may not do it right. Secondly, she depends on the role of the super-responsible and super-capable person to establish her self-worth. She has been programmed that in this way she will ensure respect and love from the others. (The truth, however, is that only her boss is happy about it because his work gets done correctly and quickly. Most of her coworkers and family members are annoyed by the tension she creates in her super-woman role.)Even when she does manage to allocate responsibilities to others, her anxiety for it to get done and be perfect forces her to do it before the others gets a chance. She is attached to both speed and perfection. She cannot relax when tasks are not completed or when something is not in its place. Except for putting up with her regular complaining and an occasional outburst of anger, her family members and coworkers have actually got a good thing going. They have very little work to do and depend on Katherine to get it done. Her occasional anger is a small price to pay for not having to do much work. They sometimes feel sorry for her and want to help her, but they do not know how. They cannot share her standards for order, cleanliness and speed of execution. These are not as important to them as they are to Katherine, and they have never had the opportunity to feel those needs because she has always taken care of everything before they could feel any lack.Katherine?s husband Peter is gradually losing his self-respect and depending more and more on Katherine for things to be done. She even has to take the car to get fixed because he leaves it for months. Her super-woman role is gradually sapping him of all his self-worth and he is becoming ever more lazy and irresponsible. He agrees to do things, but literally takes months to do them. He is spending more and more time with his friends, playing cards and killing time. He avoids contact with Katherine, who is for him is a continuous reminder of his inadequacy. She makes more money than he does, which is a blow to his manhood.Childhood ProgrammingsAll this could have been predicted by anyone who was aware of the messages they received as children. Peter, the son of two very active and successful parents, was put off by their hyperactivity and simultaneously very doubtful that he could ever succeed in their eyes and by their measure. He was very fearful of failing. This fear of failure created in him blockages to learning or doing, and he spent most of his time playing games, something he felt he could succeed at. He heard from his parents on daily basis that he was lazy, incapable and would do nothing with his life. He is now making their words come true.Katherine understood at a young age that her father wanted a son and not a daughter, and although she was much more intelligent and industrious than her younger brother, he got all the attention. Katherine then decided to prove her worth to her father in masculine terms. She decided that she must succeed professionally and economically so as to be a “man” in her father?s eyes and have his attention and love. Thus she became super-woman.Now Peter and the children have become even more lazy and rebellious. They subconsciously feel the need to do even less. They frequently subconsciously ignore agreements that they have made with her. These are subconscious reactions to the pressure and rejection they are feeling from Katherine. Now everyone is feeling victimized. Katherine is the victim of their laziness and irresponsibility, and they are victims of her bitterness, rejection and anger.A changeAs a result, Katherine is now ill. She is exhausted, in poor health, and in need of support from her family both in dealing with her illness and in getting things done around the home. She asks for help, but no one can hear her. There is no space in their minds for an “ill super-woman”. They love her and care for her, but they can not hear her needs. She had never expressed weakness, fear or inability before, and this is just so foreign that they feel so uncomfortable, and cannot respond. Katherine feels doubly hurt and abused. For so many years, she had taken care of all their needs, and now that she needs them, no one is responding. What could they have all done to avoid this situation? What lessons do they need to learn?Katherine: Does she need to learn that she is worthy of love and respect even if she is not a super woman? Or that she does not help others when she does their work for them or does not let them carry their own responsibilities? Perhaps she needs to learn to have faith in the others? abilities or to allow others to grow through their mistakes. Does she need to learn to express her needs without complaining or accusing, and believe that it is natural that the others will want to support her in fulfilling her needs? Perhaps she needs to learn how to rest when she is tired, even when everything in not perfect around her.Peter: Is his lesson to believe in himself and his intelligence and abilities? Or could it be that his self-worth is not measured by his achievements but rather by his heart and his character? Does he need to learn to motivate himself and offer more? Does he need to work on his childhood years and free himself from false programming? The others: Perhaps they need to learn to be more responsible and energetic in their responsibilities and work. Perhaps they ought to look at Katherine?s needs, ignore her complaints and accusations, and help her out even when she does not have faith in how they will do it. They might also need to learn to hear and respond to her needs even when she cannot express them. What do you think?(Adapted from the forthcoming “Relationships of Conscious Love” by Robert Elias Najemy. Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.

Eric Bogosian on writing and the creative urge

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Eric Bogosian is one of America’s great multi-dimensional talents. “There’s sort of three different careers, and any one of them could exist by itself, on its own two feet. There was that solo stuff, and then I started writing plays in the late seventies.” Although his work has spanned genres, most readers will recognize Bogosian for his acting, which has included a memorable performance in Woody Allen‘s Deconstructing Harry to co-writing and starring in the Oliver Stone movie Talk Radio (based upon his Pulitzer Prize-nominated play) to playing the bad guy in Under Siege 2 to his current role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Captain Danny Ross. They may not know, however, that he had collaborated with Frank Zappa on a album, worked with Sonic Youth, and was a voice on Mike Judge‘s Beavis & Butthead Do America. He started one of New York City’s largest dance companies, The Kitchen, which is still in existence. He starred alongside Val Kilmer in Wonderland and his play Talk Radio was recently revived on Broadway with Liev Schreiber in the role Bogosian wrote and made famous.

Currently at work on his third novel, tentatively titled The Artist, Bogosian spoke with David Shankbone about the craft of writing and his life as a creative.
